Stéphane and Bernard, a story of two lives, the lives of two men whose lives gradually intermingled to form one life together.

Stéphane at age fifteen, with his artistic spirit, studied at the ‘Conservatorie National d’Art Dramatique’ (The Arts and Dramatic Society) in Paris. He was destined for a career in acting. A beautiful and refined child, he was one of Paris’s most sort-after young fashion models for the Catherine Harles collection. Torn between two careers, acting and fashion modeling, Stéphane became a model for Vogue.

Bernard was born into a Colonial family in Guadeloupe. At fifteen years old, he was destined for a career in the Hotel business. Secretly making his own clothes, he loved the Haute Couture and created his own designs. It was at this age that Bernard discovered St. Barth and he knew instinctively that one day he would live here. He loved the island.

Stéphane, at twenty-nine years old, already a Model Agent for several years and like a whirlwind he scanned the agencies of the opt fashion capitals, Paris, Milan, Munich, Barcelona, London and New York. It was a life of glitter and fun, but also extremely tiring work. Unexpectedly, he went to Guadeloupe in 1974. On the same day, Bernard, now aged seventeen, accompanied by his brother, also a model, went to the airport. They were there to welcome Stéphane, who was his brother’s agent. Their eyes met for the first time. Bernard awaited his ‘coming of age’ and the end of his hotel schooling, to join Stéphane in Paris.

SB, Twenty Five + years old

Bernard rapidly became a part Stéphane’s Agency. They complemented one and other. One, an artist, and the other was very adept in the running the administrative side of business.

Since their meeting, they spent their vacations in St. Barth. In 1982, just over two and one half decades ago, they decided to make it their home. The island that Bernard had fallen in love with during his childhood and had introduced to Stéphane, opened their arms to them. With an address book full of contact numbers of the most famous fashion houses and those of the international Jet Set, they opened Stéphane & Bernard. Upon opening their boutique, they became the island forerunners in the world of couture: Jitrois, Missoni, John Galliano, Valentino + Roma + Red, Sonia Rykiel, Hervé Leger, Emanuel Ungaro, Versace, Jiki, Christian Lacroix, Valentino, Versace couture, and Éres swimwear.

From the time of Stéphane and Bernard’s arrival on the island, all of the famous designer labels were amongst the first to organize fashion shoots for catalogues (La Redoute, the Trois Suisses). In addition, they have a faithful following in the national and international fashion magazines. In the paradise of the island’s landscapes, the fashion world was launched in Saint Barthélemy.

Stéphane and Bernard are loved by women. They dress them and flatter them, making them beautiful. The women understand their know-how.
